Book Review
Class, Caste , Gender
(Ed.) Manoranjan Mohanty
Sage Publications, 2004
This volume on Class,Caste,Gender is the fifth in the series of ‘Readings in Indian Government and Politics’ edited by Prof. Mohanty.
In the background of growing democratic consciousness which is increasingly coming into conflict with the forces of domination, authoritarianism and hegemony, this book provides an understanding to these forces in both historical and analytical terms. In particular, the seminal essays gathered in this book explore the specificities of the crucial social categories of class, caste and gender, while simultaneously drawing attention to the arenas in which they intersect. The contributors treat the centrality of power as the organizing theme. They study the state, social processes and political movements in relation to the struggles for transformation being waged by women, disadvantaged castes and oppressed classes. Basic conceptual issues are analysed and placed in the context of social ferment and recent political developments. They tackle both rural and urban power structure, dominant and oppressed social forces, institutional and cultural processes. Providing both the micro and the macro perspectives, this volume is a significant contribution to the social and political discourse on contemporary India.
