NINETEENTH GRASSROOTS POLITICS COLLOQUIUM (GPC):
ON
IDENTITY AND POLITICS IN INDIA
22-23 FEBRUARY 2008
Proliferation of identity movements and animative campaigns at the grassroots level in recent times- the demand by the Gujjar community for recognition as Scheduled Tribes, campaigns for recognition by excluded tribal groups, dalit women, dalit Christians and Muslims, several religious and linguistic minorities, and minorities within minority groups across the country- provides the appropriate moment and context to discuss identity question and the cognate issues of caste, gender, ethnicity, sub-nationalism and nationalism in India.
Grassroots Politics Colloquium (GPC), an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary colloquium, is about the interface between academics and grassroots activists to search for answers to fundamental questions engendered by unwearied hearing of varied experiences, understandings and reflections. Besides evolving an activist-academia link, it aims at recognizing merits of an argument, and, wherever possible, making an effort to persuade activists and theoreticians to revise their view points.
The 19th GPC will explore issues surrounding identity and politics in contemporary India. Themes of this colloquium are: resistance movements; crosscutting identities such as caste and gender, tribe and gender, and gender and sexualities; land and environment; faith and ideology; localism, sub-nationalism and national identity; and civil society and globalization.
